After 200 years, the saddle is reborn
Quantum AMS Saddle
When extreme sports enthusiast Andrew Stockford realised that the fundamental design of the horse riding saddle had barely changed in more than 200 years, he packaged one up and sent it to Seymourpowell with a note reading: 'We should be able to do better than this.' Yes, indeed. The challenge was laid down and a revolution in saddle design emerged.Challenge
Running the family business, Quay Equestrian, gave Andrew Stockford plenty of contact with horses and saddles. He noticed that whilst most other sports have adopted high-tech equipment and light, strong modern materials, these advances had seemingly passed by the technique of saddle making.
Struck by the product innovation challenge, Seymourpowell assembled a dedicated team - including industrial engineers and equestrian and veterinary experts - and set out by researching the many roles a saddle has to perform.
Response
This extensive product research allowed the team to introduce a revolution in saddle design and construction, solving many of the problems associated with existing saddles, whilst also enhancing performance and comfort for the horse and rider.
This is achieved by a unique, configurable carbon fibre based chassis which is contoured to fit the horse's back. Adjustable bridge elements allow the saddle to be tailored to any horse shape and preferred rider position. Intensive research and testing of the structure resulted in a system that evenly distributes pressure over the horse's back and away from its shoulders. Crucially, its cantilevered structure also allows the horse's left and right sides to move independently.
The introduction of scientific principles and innovative industrial design to the saddle's construction does not come at the expense of all tradition: the Quantum saddle is covered throughout in the highest quality leather, offering beauty and durability.
Result
The Quantum saddle is a huge leap forward in saddle design, delivering a better fit and a more comfortable, secure and harmonious riding experience for both horse and rider. The performance gains of freedom of movement, greater comfort and less stress for the horse are demonstrable and compelling.
